Your Assignment, Should You Choose to Accept - 12/10/09

It's time once again to participate in Mama Kat's Writer's Workshop. The prompts this week are all about life - and how we all must come together to help when one of us is in crisis.

Be sure to visit Mama Kat's to see the other prompts and responses, and to participate in all of the outreach to help.

I chose prompt #3:
Write a poem about a fight you or someone you love has struggled to win.

We're In Your Corner

The fight is on! Get your tickets!
Pack refreshments - this is going to be a long one.

Venue: Family Health Arena
On the card? Merely Mortal Nancy vs. Ratfink Cancer

Round One: The Diagnosis
In this corner? Uterine Papillary Serous Carcinoma, Stage III
Life-robbing bastard packs a mean punch
His record? Out of every 100 opponents, 37 remain standing after five years

The underdog? Nancy
Daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother
The odds are stacked against her.
Her 66-year old body will suffer many blows

Round Two: Surgery
Monday, December 14, 2009
She has one of the best cut men (surgeons) around
Radiation and Chemotherapy, sparring partners, are ready to go in

Round Three: Treatment
The family is rallying around, ready to offer much needed support
Stan, her husband and coach
Rubs her tense shoulders
And tells her to keep her head and her gloves up

She bounces on her toes
As they prepare
For the fight of their lives.

You can read my recent post about Nancy here.
