My mom was not above interrogating her grandchildren. Each Christmas, she’d cajole them to tell her what we bought for her.
My kids, not wanting to lie to their grandma, looked to me for guidance – they knew it was supposed to be a surprise. I just figured that, to use a football saying, a good defense is the best offense (or is it the other way around?).
From that year forward (until she stopped asking), anytime Grandma asked the kids what she was getting, they’d say “a football” – and we’d include a toy football as one of her gifts.
